AirFlick just sends over the file to the Apple TV as is. Video is a bit grainy-looking and laggy when I use mirroring on my 11" Air, because I assume that the Air is re-encoding everything in the display buffer and sending that over the the Apple TV. Reaperhulk, I'd be interested if you could compare the quality of a video with AirFlick. Let me know if you have more questions and I'll be happy to experiment further. coreaudiod uses ~5% CPU when it's active and the windowserver might consume an additional 1%? It's so small that it's difficult to tell. * Thanks to Quick Sync the CPU impact of Airplay is nearly zero.
AIRFLICK FOR PC FULL
Some rare stuttering was seen with fast action full screen video. * Maximum observed bitrate was ~10.4mbps (1.3MBps). Unfortunately, since I don't own one I can't test it.
AIRFLICK FOR PC 1080P
And, if it does, does it improve video quality/allow higher bitrates? Edit: I've seen around the web that the A5 ATV does indeed support 1080p Airplay mirroring. * I would be very interested in knowing if the A5 AppleTV allows 1080p Airplay. If you run at 1680x1050 you get vertical letterboxing to maintain the aspect ratio on the AppleTV.
AIRFLICK FOR PC 720P
There was no visible difference in quality between these two resolutions (presumably Airplay is scaling and encoding at 720p for the higher res). * Tests were performed both at 1680x944 and also 1280x720 (AppleTV Airplay resolution). Video quality was again mostly indistinguishable. Here's a shot from an iPhone instead, which tells you precisely nothing other than that Airplay is cool: įuturama episode, 5mbps 1080p h264. Since I can't get a direct capture off my TV I can't provide the images for comparison. Audio was fine for 2 channel, but obviously it was a downmix from the original DD5.1/DTS. Fine detail (texture in water, blades of grass, et cetera) were all lost. Video quality was significatnly degraded. Planet Earth (episode 3? Now I can't remember!). Video and audio quality were essentially indistinguishable Mac: Late 2011 MBP (connected over 5GHz 802.11n with ~13MBps throughput average)ĪppleTV (A4 model, not 1080p) attached to 52" 1080p Sony LCD via HDMI (connected via gigabit ethernet) But you'd think it would actually be a really effective HTPC if the quality is good, since the iMac is a fully-capable computer that you probably won't be using anyway if you're off watching a movie. Not that having an iMac makes you a poor person or anything. Regardless, I'd still like to see if someone has been able to use AirPlay Mirroring effectively as a poor person's HTPC. I don't want to buy a new computer! My iMac works JUST fine for what I want it to do. Okay, it's been established that my iMac isn't compatible. If someone gets around to trying this out and can write about it, great! If not, then I might be able to get an installation done this weekend and I'll write my review them. I think that counts as "older Mac" so I'd like to know if that computer can handle AirPlay. Some random Googling indicated that older Macs won't be able to handle the AirPlay requirements. I suspect that this won't be possible as you can't exactly AirPlay to the iPad speaker with iTunes but it would be pretty cool if it worked. Things like puttering around on the Diablo III auction house count, too.ģ) Projecting from the Mac to the iPad. Siracusa didn't cover Airplay in his review much and so I'm wondering if anyone here will be able to provide one for me, or if no one gets around to it, I'll end up doing it myself.ġ) Playing web-only content from Hulu to my TVĢ) Playing non-twitch games on my Mac on my TV, especially text adventure games and similar. The primary feature I'm looking forward to is Airplay to play from the Mac to my TV.
